'It's really useful because we can look at the information from all different angles and it's so easy to use,' says Ms Hamilton. 'It will help us rationalise and standardise our suppliers and products, which in turn means we can get better prices.'

KTP

SpendInsight was the second KTP project under taken by @UK PLC.  The first project was an award winning Artificial Intelligence system for fraud detection, and predictive shopping.

The first project was a single associate project, with originally Nils Junker-King acting as associate.  The AI moved into Baysian research and the mathematics was too challenging for Nils, who became an employee of @UK PLC.  Dr John Howroyd was recruited since his PhD was in mathematics, and he was known to have the necessary skills having worked with some of the academics on other research.  The result was a successful award winning project, that was at a significantly higher academic and technical level than most KTP projects.

SpendInsight was a significant set up in level, both academically and technically.  @UK PLC was strengthened by having Dr John Howroyd on board, and based on the previous experience, the objective of the project was both knowledge transfer and ground breaking research that would result in PhD's for the associates.

SpendInsight is an unusual KTP project since it had 3 associates, and two Universities.  Professor Mark Bishop had moved from University of Reading to Goldsmiths College London as chair of Cognitive Computing and wished to keep in touch with @UK PLC after the first successful project, and his colleagues at University of Reading's cybernetics research team.

The project has justified the sponsors investment in 3 KTP projects by achieving ground breaking research which is expected to result in the 2 associates that did not already have PhD's being awarded PhD's for their work on the project, with the 3rd associate already having a PhD in mathematics.

@UK PLC contributed a significant amount through its development team, and the 30 years of government purchasing information provided by @UK PLC's subsidiary Coding International.

SpendInsight has already been awarded a Buying Solutions framework contract for the public sector, which is a good level of success.

However, SpendInsight's ability to provide guaranteed savings for the public sector has already repaid the cost of the sponsorship, and made the project into a success in all measures, with associate development, company development and profitability and unusually an additional benefit to the public sector in the form of improved purchasing.
